The original, '80s version wasn't rocket science but it was fun and sweet with great music and was loved by kids and adults. My mom played the soundtrack all the time. The premise of the original was taken with a grain of salt. In the remake they try to focus on the premise by getting all dramatic and emotional which just makes the fact that dancing is outlawed outrageous and comical.
Not to mention, why would they outlaw dancing for drinking and driving? That's rather far fetched. In the original both Ren and Ariel had problems but they seemed to deal with them like any other teen, with trademark angst, so, you could identify with them and like them. In the remake they have therapy kind of anger and issues that I could not identify with and the script failed to make the characters sympathetic, so, I didn't care about them. Ren was more just angry and a bit of a jerk though, lesser in the sense that they added much bigger jerks to this film, I suppose in an attempt to make him more likable, though, that failed , and Ariel was also angry, reckless, slutty, bratty, and made her best friend angry what is to like about that? In the original, Kevin Bacon was cute and charming and a leader.

Footloose is a movie made in It is actually a remake of the edition of Footloose. The story is set in a small town that has a ban against dancing because of the actions of some teenagers years back that have left the residents scarred and hurting. They have placed this ban out of fear and in hopes of protecting their young people. A teenager moves to town from a bigger city to move in with his uncle and other extended family members. His name is Ren McCormick and he has recently lost his mother to cancer. Ren is played by Kenny Wormald. Although Ren is a city boy he quickly becomes friends with a country boy, Will Hewitt. Will is country and proud. He is also very comical in this film and soon becomes best friends with Ren.
Meanwhile, a girl is capturing Ren's eye. Ariel Moore, played by Julianne Hough, is in the rebellious throes of her teenage years and is bucking anything her parents say. She is dating bad-boy Chuck, spending her free time sneaking away to be with him and dancing at a local snack bar, among other things. Ariel really gets herself into trouble with Chuck who hits her. Ren is always there to pick up the pieces and try to protect her. Ren does not understand the ban on dancing and isn't going to sit idly by and allow things to continue on in the pattern they have been before he got to town.
Ren is determined that they are going to have a senior prom. He decides to go before the authorities of the town and plead his case as to why they should be allowed to do so. The authorities of the town happen to include Ariel's father who is a minster. Ren is prepared and even has bible verses ready to back him up in his argument. Ren's hard work is quickly shot down when the town will not back down from their ban on dancing. He continues to work toward the goal of having a senior prom. He finds a location just outside the city limits and makes arrangements to have the prom there. Gathering his nerve, he asks Ariel's father if he can take her to the prom. Ariel's father is finally starting to see that Ren is not the person he thought he was and actually cares for his daughter and relents. Footloose is full of music and dancing to be enjoyed by the audience. Footloose is a drama with a runtime of 1 hour and 53 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 5.
